Overview
ZAP Surgical develops dedicated stereotactic radiosurgery technology centered on the ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® platform, a self-shielded, cobalt-free system purpose-built for cranial SRS. Rather than adapting a multipurpose radiotherapy linac, ZAP-X combines a dedicated low-energy linac, dual-gantry gyroscopic delivery, circular collimation, integrated shielding, image guidance, and dedicated treatment-planning software to support highly conformal non-coplanar radiosurgery for intracranial and selected head-and-neck indications.
ZAP Surgical’s current commercial portfolio is more focused than vendors such as Radformation or Standard Imaging: the main clinical platform is ZAP-X, supported by the ZAP-Axon® Radiosurgery Planning System and several integrated delivery technologies.
ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® - Dedicated Cranial SRS Platform
A purpose-built stereotactic radiosurgery system for treatment of brain tumors, intracranial lesions, and selected head-and-neck conditions. Its dual independent gantries create a spherical treatment workspace capable of delivering more than 1,000 potential non-coplanar beam directions, supporting high conformality and rapid dose fall-off around targets.
ZAP-Axon® - Dedicated SRS Treatment Planning
An integrated radiosurgery planning system covering image fusion, contouring, planning and optimization, plan evaluation, comparison, and approval. Axon is designed specifically for cranial SRS rather than general-purpose radiotherapy and includes rapid optimization plus side-by-side comparison of dose distributions, DVHs, plan metrics, isocentre placement, and collimator selections.
Gyroscopic Dual-Gantry Delivery - Highly Non-Coplanar Beam Geometry
ZAP-X uses two independently rotating gantries to move the radiation source through a spherical delivery geometry. This architecture enables routine use of a very large number of non-coplanar beam directions, supporting conformal dose shaping and steep three-dimensional dose gradients around cranial targets.
Dedicated 3 MV Linear Accelerator - Cobalt-Free SRS
The system uses a dedicated approximately 3 MV linac rather than radioactive cobalt sources. ZAP Surgical positions this lower-energy beam specifically for SRS to reduce radiation scatter while eliminating the need for periodic cobalt-source replacement. The system operates at up to 1,500 MU/min according to the manufacturer.
Circular Collimation & Short-SAD Beam Geometry - Sharp SRS Dose Fall-Off
ZAP-X employs a tungsten-shielded circular collimation system together with a 45 cm source-to-axis distance. The manufacturer reports very low collimator leakage and a substantially sharper beam penumbra than conventional 100 cm SAD multipurpose platforms, supporting dose conformity around small intracranial targets and sparing of nearby critical structures.
Integrated Self-Shielding - Flexible Installation
The treatment system incorporates substantial radiation shielding into its own structure, reducing dependence on a conventional high-density radiotherapy bunker. This can enable installation in settings where constructing a traditional SRS vault would be difficult or costly. Actual facility shielding requirements remain subject to local regulations, workload, room design, and site-specific radiation-protection assessment.
